News & Events at 5th Sutton Scout Group

News & Events at 5th Sutton Scout Group

December 11th Scouts Carol Singing for Save the Children UK in Times Square
All scouts are encouraged to attend in full uniform (neatly) with scarf on December 11th at Sutton's Times Square Shopping Centre, next to the indoor entrance to BHS.

We will meet at 545 pm and sing from 6pm to 7 pm.

Scouts can either hold the collection buckets or sing. Song words will be provided.

This activity accounts for 50% of their community badge. This is one way for scouts to give back to the community, I hope you will all attend.

December 19th 7:30 - 9:30 pm Scouts Christmas Party (and Regina and Andy's leaving party)
All scouts and their parents are welcome to attend. Scouts are encouraged to bring cds with music. If you would be able to bring some party food see Regina on Friday December 12th. This party will also be the final night that Regina and Andy Keith will be acting as Scout Leaders.

December 19th farewell to Andy and Regina Keith as Scout Leaders
Andy has accepted a job in Africa (Guinea Bissau) and leaves the UK on Jan 2nd. Regina and Andy took over the scouts (as joint leaders) three years ago with three scouts, today there are 25 scouts. Regina and Andy are saddened to say farewell however they would like to say thank you to all those who supported thier three years from 5th Sutton and in the District. The troop has participated in most district events winning and placing highly in many including the cooking handball and football tournaments. This year the troop had two teams in the Tate Shield, four scouts in the SOUWEST gang show and three scouts moved up to explorers. Clear signs of a thriving and active scout troop. The new Scout Leaders will be Dean and Jeanette Whitehead (Dean has been working with Regina and Andy for the last two years), we hope that parents will support Dean and Jeanette in the transition.

Work Weekend

As advertised in the recent newsletter, we had a work weekend on 15/16th November.
Unfortunately, the requested help was once again not forth-coming and so we only got a fraction of the intended work done......please bear with us, as we slowly complete the works....we, also, have work and family commitments outside scouting!!
A special thank you (from me) to the fathers of the following Beavers who gave up their time, and had a laugh in the process.....Sam,Sam and Craig.....also the members of the exec and their families, and to Selco for donating some materials ( well done Andy for organising that!)....sorry if I missed anyone out, hopefully I'll have more to thank after the next one..............................

Beavers and Cubs: Astronomy Roadshow

Please see the details of the letter given out on Tues 28th at Cubs:
"On Wednesday 19th November Ann Morley (Baloo) of 5th Carshalton, has arranged for the Astronomy Roadshow to come and visit the Beavers and the Cubs at the Scout Hall.

All Beavers in uniform should meet at the hall at 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start and need to be picked up from the hall at 7.15pm promptly.

All Cubs in uniform should meet at the hall at 7.10pm ready to start as soon as the Beavers leave and be picked up at 8.15pm.

Please note this (free) event is in addition to the normal Tuesday Cub and Thursday Beaver meetings.

Any queries please contact us. Thank you. Vanessa & Derek Lambert. 01737 551726"

I understand that this includes a big dome (in the hall) with the children inside and all the stars/planets projected onto it, and is something that the kids would hate to miss. Eddie

Just found this link...to give you an idea of the evening http://www.astronomyroadshow.com/ Eddie

Beavers Halloween Cinema

Halloween cinema.....for those that put their names down for the above event, please meet me outside the venue at 4.40 pm on Friday.
Remember your scary costumes (optional, but no uniform required).
There is also definitely space for siblings, if you already put them on the list, and there will probably be space if any parents want to stay rather than drop the child and pick up later (entirely up to you).
Venue details all as on the poster below, and the letter sent home.

IT Badge

I have had a few enquiries about what is required for the IT badge.

I have checked out the following link:
http://www.itbadge.org.uk/
which is safe to allow your child onto. It will guide him/her through the various stages required.

On Stage One:
A certificate can be printed out at the end, after the Beaver works his/her way through the tasks.
If the parent can sign off tasks 1 and 5, and the Beaver brings it in (with the poster and picture from task 3 and 4) then I am happy that they have satisfied all requirements, and they will have earned their IT badge.

Note for cubs/scouts parents: as this is a “staged” badge, cubs and scouts details are available from the same page with the same criteria

There is also a competition:
Representatives from BCS and The Scout Association will select the winners based on creativity and innovative use of IT Skills.

One winner will be selected from each age range:
winners in Beaver, Cub and Scout categories will each collect a Nintendo DS Lite game console.
Details here: https://members.scouts.org.uk/competition_view.php?competition_id=2

Derek & Vanessa (our Cub Leaders)

Congratulations
Derek & Vanessa
on your 40th Wedding Anniversary
Well done from all at 5th Sutton

New GSL Needed Urgently!

Thank-you Chris Hatton for all your hard work and dedication as outgoing GSL for 5th Sutton Scout Group.
Enjoy your retirement.

Can you help?

We need someone to take over as Group Scout Leader.
We are currently GSL-less as Chris has had to retire on health and commitment grounds.
Are you willing to give time towards a fantastic scout, cub and beaver group, to help with the running of the group and to co-ordinate with the district for events and funding? There will be a dedicated team of people behind you with experience and knowledge that will back up so don't feel you have to be experience within scouting already - willingness and courage are all it takes. So whatever your background, experience or anything else please let us know if you are interested in helping the 5th Sutton Scout Group.
if you can help please contact Bob, Derek or any of the group leaders just for a chat about the position and any further information you may need.
